Most helpful review The Assault

  • good movie about unbelieve event and great heroism

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Fact first : it was the GIGN and not the 2 rep 7 platoon (foreign legion) like the customer before me say because the Groupe d Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale is the anti terrorist and assault team on home soil (the gendarmerie is part of the army like professionnal fireman in france).

second : the film himself is good , i remember well the event and how tense it was to watch this on live news. well the film keep it that way but the camera shaking all the time to make look like its live could put some people off .

  • A French Version Of United 93

    Rated - 3.5 stars

Know doubt that the tremendous success of Paul Greengrass's highly acclaimed film, United 93, must have had a heavy influence in The Assault actually getting both financed and eventually made. It is after all incredibly similar in both style and content to that independently made movie. At least the French actually know how to produce a rather authentic and realistic drama that is both quite tense and rather gripping at times. I am however just absolutely dreading the totally unecessary American remake of this particular film, that will no doubt inevitably happen not before too long.

  • Swing and a miss for this French thriller

    Rated - 3.0 stars
    By Cashplays (47 reviews) , 12 Apr 2013
Not great but not terrible either. Such a simple story needs to be told very well. Technical details must be spot on and most importantly the main characters need to be believable and likable. This film falls short on both fronts. It tries to do too much and spreads itself too thin to be either compelling and interesting or just a really good action film. Even the final assault went on for a bit too long! The end result is an average 'could have been so much better' film that is torn between all out action fest and serious drama.

  • One up for the SAS!

    Rated - 4.0 stars
By Scooper (17 reviews) from Altrincham , 28 Mar 2013
A true story and a gripping one at that. From the outset it is clear the French Special Forces are not in the same league as the SAS as they set about hostage rescue.. Hostage situations are extreme and political motives make the perpetrators hard to fathom. This is the background to how the French authorities view the situation of a high jacked plane full of passengers. Will the rescuers pull it off? Will politics determine the final response from the French Government? Gripping stuff and long enough ago to keep the outcome obscure. Real life is more exiting than fiction for sure.

  • The destructive force of ignorant faith

    Rated - 5.0 stars
By Oozoid (59 reviews) from Ayr , 23 Mar 2013
The film is marred by unnecessary melodrama, but not so much as to mask its imperative message of what WILL happen when absurd beliefs are not only permitted to fester but are actually nurtured by those in authority in order to render their subjects vulnerable to brainwashing and amenable to illogic.
