Down memory lane with the coolest chick of all

If there is one thing to be thankful for about DVD's it is the fact you have the chance to watch these old shows at your leisure instead of the vagaries of TV scheduling. If you are of a certain age then Mrs Emma Peel was (and should still be) your ideal woman. In these episodes Diana Rigg is even more gorgeous than remembered and while Patrick Macnee is less handsome he still retains a boyish charm that is miles ahead of Ralph Fiennes in the very poor film version. The first story concerns a dating agency indulging in a little murder on the side to supplement their income. The second seems to be the template of the recent movie where some scientists are able to conjure up thunderstorms to create havoc and the the third is almost like an episode of The Twilight Zone when Steed and Peel turn up at a RAF base which is deserted. However its not the destinations but the journey and the travelling companions that are there to be enjoyed. The mix of flirtatious putdowns and the blokey humour is a winner, Mrs Peel is not just sexy but also one of the lads. Plus there are some fun cameos, such as seeing Steed beating up Patrick Cargill.- Was this review helpful to you?

By noirpanther (218 reviews) from London , 04 Apr 2006This tongue in cheek secret agent series is fondly remembered 40 years after its broadcast mainly because of the charismatic peformances of its leads, Diana Rigg and Patrick MacNee, who were clearly fond of each other and enjoying their work. The episodes in files 3 and 4 should be seen as an enjoyable introduction to the series, which soon developed later to become far more imaginative, witty, exciting and sophisticated. I'm also surprised that it hasn't dated as much as I'd expected - and that must be because, like the James Bond series, it was well ahead of its time. Classic.- Was this review helpful to you?
