  • I was pleasantly surprised!

    [Highly rated reviewer]

To be honest, I rented this film more out of curiosity to see how bad this version was going to be in comparison to the original TV series and not expecting very much. Admittedly the storyline is cringe-worthy with a capital ‘C’ (Sean Connery tries to take over the world by manipulating the weather!), however I really don’t think this is what the film is about, so if you can’t get over the ‘lack of decent storyline’ or hoping that this is going to be like the TV series - then don’t watch it! Instead, sit down with a huge slice of cake – and view this more from the ‘Americans poking gentle fun out of British eccentricities’ angle (e.g. lots of ‘tea-drinking’ gags, projecting the stiff upper lip throughout ridiculous situations, repressed sexual desires expressed through some hilarious innuendos between Steed and Mrs Peel, etc.). Ralph Fiennes doesn’t do a bad job, but Uma Thurman is very good (very convincing British accent too and some wonderful outfits girls), though not nearly as dominatrix-like as the wonderful Diana Rigg! Three words to some this film up; quirky, eccentric and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Worth renting.

  • Sean Connery dressed as a giant Teddy Bear - What?

    Rated - 2.0 stars

I like a dollop of cheese with my movies but Avengers can't make it's mind up delivering an incoherent mess with shifting tones.

While the original series flirted with the bizare and ridiculous this movie can't seem to decide if it's an homage, parody or straight up action orientated remake.

Plot twists arrive without explanation (clones, flying bug bots) and drive us towards a rather drawn out move and lackluster conclusion.

Despite the chaos on display Ralph Fiennes and

Uma Thurman are brilliantly cast as Steed and Peel and really derserve a better outing than this.

On the flip side Sean Connery is a shambles attempting to mimic the Bond villiany not from his own turn but more Roger moore's era (the Teddy Bear scene is cringe worthy).

That said this film is quite the curiosity and worth a watch just to see the madness that someone out there thought would be the begining of a new cinema franchise, that and Uma Thurman in a catsuit

I give it 5 star only because the film is perfect for the reflection of the Original with the Original Cast. If you are Nostalgic then watch. If you are expecting a modern style you will be disappointed

  • Shiny, pretty, tiresome waste of your time

    Rated - 0.5 stars

It wants to be a Bond film - title sequences are the give away, visuals and music - but hasn't a prayer. The story: master techno villain seeks to control world weather, Steed & Peel on behalf of the British Ministry have to foil the villain.

The film also tries to channel the original concept's surreal touches. These just look daft.

Fiennes and Thurman try very hard to sizzle. You know when you break an egg into a frying pan that isn't hot enough...? Connery just seems miscast.

Above all, style overwhelms substance... plot... atmosphere; it all looks pretty but nothing made me care about what was happening or the people involved. And into this shiny froth drop sexual jokes of nauseating grossness. What were they THINKING?!

Tiresome. And a sad waste of good people.
