LOVEFiLM Review The Aviator

  • 4 stars out of 5

Martin Scorsese's biopic of Howard Hughes, the legendary but complex playboy, filmmaker and aviator, is thorough and beautifully shot.

If you like planes, Di Caprio, money, fame, then go for it.

I have nothing agains planes and aviation (I have worked in that Industry..). However, an insight on why the aviator's planes were so innovative could have been useful. But then it would have distracted from the plot. So why show so many planes so aimlessly...?

I did get extremely bored, and believe me, it does not happen very often as I love films in general and am a cinephile.

I don't think Di Caprio is believable in this role. He seems too young from the beginning to the end. And Di Caprio is one of these actors like Catherine Deneuve, who can only play themselves... Look at their eyes and you will see them, not who they play. DDisturbing.

I would have loved Scorsese to work deeper on the characters, instead they are superficially treated.

The film is based on the Material rather than humans/characters. This is why I felt so bored. From the start, there was nothing I could relate to.

Hughes' compulsive disorder could also have been treated in a more subtle and insidious manner, with Hughes point of view. Instead, it seemed ridiculous.

Maybe the life of Hughes was well related (this is an assumption), but accuracy does not make art.

I saw the film before I saw any critic of it (I was not told how looooooonnnnnng it would be either!).

With hindsight, I still wonder why one would find this film great. Please tell me if you know the answer!

  • Has a lot to offer - if you have some time

Very interesting to learn about Howard Hughes, played brilliantly by L. DeCaprio. Had a lot of layers and different facets which kept me watching, although it was over-long (my other half did not stick with it). Features lots of great actors who add a lot to the movie; Cate is great as Kate! I liked the filmography, costumes and sets; very well done.

  • Good film - don't be put off my aeroplanes and a hammy first couple of scenes!

For some reason in the first couple of scenes DiCaprio seems really hammy, but don't be put off as he really grows into the character. Not quite sure how he so convincingly manages to age before your eyes throughout the movie. Don't be put off either that it's about aeroplanes and Hollywood - key themes are also relationships, mental health and doggedly pursuing what inspires you. All round it's definitely worth watching - but by far the most impressive part is Cate Blanchett as Katherine Hepburn. You'd never think she could pull it off, but it's as if Hepburn materialises before your eyes.

  • Interesting and enjoyable but rather long

I enjoyed this film and thought Leonardo Di Caprio gave a good performance. Amazing how someone with a flawed personality and mind like Howard Hughes could rise to, and maintain, such an elevated position. I doubt it happens very often with the majority of people. Just goes to show how effective money can be! Nevertheless it was interesting to see how he operated. I thought the film was rather long, I was beginning to flag by the end, but I would still have been interested to see how his later life went as well. Perhaps there could have been two films, each covering more than this one film did.

  • Overlong but stylish

Apart from being overlong, this was a stylish film, and an interesting look into the flawed mind of a genius. A fantastic cast gave good performances, and Leonardo de Caprio was excellent. I think it would have benefitted from being about 30 minutes shorter.
