Tense, unsettling and sometimes jump-out-of-your-seat scary, The Awakening is the sort of movie that will give you chills without really trying.

A must-see for lovers of the supernatural genre, and a genuinely very good film in its own rightBy roncoach (370 reviews) from suffolk , 11 Nov 2011
[Highly rated reviewer]This is a way-above-average supernatural thriller. I admit to a bias, as I enjoy this genre, but find so few ----and those I do find are not often worth the effort.
This one, though, is a very good film. It has suspense; indeed it has a few 'jump in your seats' scenes. And, although it is an overused word , the film is 'atmospheric' to a high degree.
It follows our heroine, a good actress who is going to be a big star if she continues to use the same self-effacing charm and underacting unselfishness as she uses in this film. It follows her on a quest up't north to a strange, eerie boarding school where there are strange goings-on : not very original, I hear you say, and yes, the storyline is far from unique. But that never stops so many films of every genre from 'standing out from the crowd' if it works well as a film in itself, whether the plot sounds hackneyed or not. This film falls into the latter category.
The 'feel' of the era it is set in makes a huge difference to me when I watch any film not set in the present day : and this movie pleases me with its genuine post WWI 'feel' ( not that I was around then, so I can't verify it LOL; but you know what I mean : for example, medieval dramas either capture the period 'feel' or they do not; and viewers sense it even though they can have no idea of what the actual 'feel' was in reality. Gosh, that was boring....how did I get on to that unnecessary 'aside' ??? Sorry.
Back to 'The Awakening'..............it is full of atmosphere and chills, set in a great location for this genre of film, filmed well in 'shady' eerie photography which it needs, has good performances from the small cast, and will keep viewers watching in suspense right up to the end......and the ending is better than some ruinous endings which seem to get attracted to the supernatural genre of films.
Bet you enjoy it :)))) Recommended.

The Awakening, makes you think just maybe??By thecuckoo (136 reviews) , 24 Oct 2013A brilliant film with many twists within it. Good acting and a first class plot. Seen it before but was glad to watch it again to understand it a lot better. Never dismiss anything or say it happened because the window or door was open and it blew this in or blew this out it happening because somebody we could not see was there. Spooky.
Confused and confusing but worth a goBy Rockinroy (50 reviews) from Milton Keynes , 22 Oct 2013A suitably amusing effort but I think I expected more given a solid cast. A mix of The Town, The Wire, HP and Game of Thrones are all here but being Brits for a change. It starts well and then I got sort of confused as to whether this was a ghost story or something else. One has the insidious feeling that this movie is a little too clever for its own good or is it just badly written as a story? I liked the idea of a female debunker of spiritualists in the twenties but then it went off the rails and entered Wilkie Collins territory I think it is with spooky goings on at a public school. A small cast carry it off fairly well but it left me unsatisfied again. It aint no Woman in Black but has its moments.
Tasteful Spooky YarnBy Paulthelifelongmoviefan (8 reviews) from Cambridge , 15 Oct 2013A tasteful shocker from the BBC that makes you jump and keeps you guessing. Rebecca Hall's character has made a career from debunking apparent paranormal events but when she is called to look into events at a spooky boy's boarding school, even she starts to wonder.... There is a very pleasing final question mark over the true outcome of events. Worth a watch.
This was tripeBy JamesandCalli (23 reviews) from Oswestry, Shrops , 26 Sep 2013Slow and very disappointing, The trailer had the few moments of tension woven together. The film contained all the usual house-of-horror cliches. Okay, there was a twist at the end - but you have to persevere through the whole things to get there.
A dull copy of 'The others'By Saba173 (4 reviews) , 22 Sep 2013I was pretty bored the whole way while watching this movie and so was my husband. It is a pale and dull copy of 'The Others' with N. Kidman.. But of course, not as half as good. Can't say I really jumped either. Will certainly not remember it for long.
