A must-see for lovers of the supernatural genre, and a genuinely very good film in its own right

This is a way-above-average supernatural thriller. I admit to a bias, as I enjoy this genre, but find so few ----and those I do find are not often worth the effort.
This one, though, is a very good film. It has suspense; indeed it has a few 'jump in your seats' scenes. And, although it is an overused word , the film is 'atmospheric' to a high degree.
It follows our heroine, a good actress who is going to be a big star if she continues to use the same self-effacing charm and underacting unselfishness as she uses in this film. It follows her on a quest up't north to a strange, eerie boarding school where there are strange goings-on : not very original, I hear you say, and yes, the storyline is far from unique. But that never stops so many films of every genre from 'standing out from the crowd' if it works well as a film in itself, whether the plot sounds hackneyed or not. This film falls into the latter category.
The 'feel' of the era it is set in makes a huge difference to me when I watch any film not set in the present day : and this movie pleases me with its genuine post WWI 'feel' ( not that I was around then, so I can't verify it LOL; but you know what I mean : for example, medieval dramas either capture the period 'feel' or they do not; and viewers sense it even though they can have no idea of what the actual 'feel' was in reality. Gosh, that was boring....how did I get on to that unnecessary 'aside' ??? Sorry.
Back to 'The Awakening'..............it is full of atmosphere and chills, set in a great location for this genre of film, filmed well in 'shady' eerie photography which it needs, has good performances from the small cast, and will keep viewers watching in suspense right up to the end......and the ending is better than some ruinous endings which seem to get attracted to the supernatural genre of films.

I even had to rewatch it straight away as I was sure I missed somthing. The Question is is she or isnt she that is what I can't get? surprisingly fantastic film

So glad I did as this is a wee gem of a movie, spooky but with a really good storyline- Was this review helpful to you?

Worth a watch
