Tense, unsettling and sometimes jump-out-of-your-seat scary, The Awakening is the sort of movie that will give you chills without really trying.

A must-see for lovers of the supernatural genre, and a genuinely very good film in its own rightBy roncoach (370 reviews) from suffolk , 11 Nov 2011
[Highly rated reviewer]This is a way-above-average supernatural thriller. I admit to a bias, as I enjoy this genre, but find so few ----and those I do find are not often worth the effort.
This one, though, is a very good film. It has suspense; indeed it has a few 'jump in your seats' scenes. And, although it is an overused word , the film is 'atmospheric' to a high degree.
It follows our heroine, a good actress who is going to be a big star if she continues to use the same self-effacing charm and underacting unselfishness as she uses in this film. It follows her on a quest up't north to a strange, eerie boarding school where there are strange goings-on : not very original, I hear you say, and yes, the storyline is far from unique. But that never stops so many films of every genre from 'standing out from the crowd' if it works well as a film in itself, whether the plot sounds hackneyed or not. This film falls into the latter category.
The 'feel' of the era it is set in makes a huge difference to me when I watch any film not set in the present day : and this movie pleases me with its genuine post WWI 'feel' ( not that I was around then, so I can't verify it LOL; but you know what I mean : for example, medieval dramas either capture the period 'feel' or they do not; and viewers sense it even though they can have no idea of what the actual 'feel' was in reality. Gosh, that was boring....how did I get on to that unnecessary 'aside' ??? Sorry.
Back to 'The Awakening'..............it is full of atmosphere and chills, set in a great location for this genre of film, filmed well in 'shady' eerie photography which it needs, has good performances from the small cast, and will keep viewers watching in suspense right up to the end......and the ending is better than some ruinous endings which seem to get attracted to the supernatural genre of films.
Bet you enjoy it :)))) Recommended.

A true British ghost story.By Cashplays (51 reviews) , 04 Apr 2013A good, classy, spooky, well made British ghost story. Not perfect but a solid script, good direction and quality acting lift it above the hum drum American and low budget, home video, British independent c**p that has saturated the market in the last 30 odd years. The action is driven by story and characters and moves smoothly enough with only the odd dull moment here and there. A slightly predictable and slightly confusing ending is all that I can say to knock this rather good and entertaining little film.
Creepy supernatural with a hint of romanceBy Sausage42 (46 reviews) , 03 Apr 2013Wasn't sure what to expect of this film but the trailer had a great sense of atmosphere and suspense so I thought I'd give it a go. The atmosphere was excellent, most of the action being set in a creepy and mostly empty boarding school which lends itself excellently to this. Unfortunately, most of the scares in the film rely on dramatic music and things jumping out at the camera which is really clunky against this quietly creepy background. The back story is a bit ridiculous and once the 'twist' is revealed towards the end, much of what has happened previously fails to make much sense but I guess all films require some degree of suspension of disbelief. I didn't really like the ending but it was always going to be love or hate with this storyline. It is nice to see the romance between the main characters develop, both of whom are significantly flawed in their own ways.

Fantastic filmBy a customer , 30 Mar 2013Great film, supernatural drama and suspense. Kept me interested all the way through. I wasn't hiding behind the sofa, but it had me jumping! Great story line, very clever. Chose this by accident, but glad I still watched it.
Def worth a watch, good filmBy Nene89 (64 reviews) , 29 Mar 2013As many of the other reviews say - one of the best films of this genre for a long time. It wasnt 'scary' but had a few times that make you jump, its not really a horror but a thriller/drama, in my opinion.
