Anyone who is tired of the clich?s of English costume drama should see this to be reminded of how good the best ones are.
The joys here, apart from the historical realism we expect, are in the casting: Nigel Hawthorn's explosive Archdeacon you can hate at first and then later realise he's a good chap really, Cyril Luckham's lovable fruity-voiced old bishop, Geraldine McEwan's awful Mrs Proudie (over-the-top and why not) and Alan Rickman's silkily evil Obadiah Slope are hugely memorable.
But the greatest pleasure is Donald Pleasence, often a hateful villain but here showing what a superb actor he was by playing with utter conviction the kind, gentle, almost saintly Septimus Harding.
Not to be missed.
IMHO this is the best dramatisation the Beeb has done. My two favourite Trollope novels are neatly joined and adapted with superb acting and direction. I have at last been able to replace my worn-out VHS cassettes with sparkling new DVDs. Alan Rickman arrived on the public scene with his clever portrayal as the immortal Slope. I think that Alan Plater said that Rickman had been born to play Slope. Rickman seemed to disappear after this, reappearing a few years later in the delightful Truly, Madly Deeply and then upstaged Kevin Costner in Robin, Prince of Thieves. Rickman's new prominence is demonstrated by his image displacing dear Donald Pleasence on DVD case cover (cf the cassettes). Barchester Chronicles successfully portrays Trollope's humanity and is a life-enhancing experience, unlike, say Big Brother ... Enjoy!
