    Rock the Casbah!!!

Talk about ahead of its time!!! This films was one of the first portray arabs as not shifty, lowlifes but as heroes.

I loved the grainy photography, the editing and the Morricone soundtrack is sparse and rhymic.

Anyone who loves non-Hollywood classic will be fascinated in this film.

Poor transfer but still great stuff

First the problems, most annoying is the extremely poor quality of the subtitling which leaves out chunks of dialogue, in one case a question is asked and the answer is not recorded. Secondly, it has been some time since I saw this at the cinema but it seems that the DVD transfer is muddy and seems to have occasional jarring edits, although this may be because there is apparently new footage here.

However, this is one of the few films that could actually be used as a primer for guerrilla warfare combining documentary realism and harsh political insight, as such its re-release is very timely indeed, although sadly very little has changed in the last fifty years in the way that governments and insurgents behave, leaving it both a revolutionary rallying cry and depressing history lesson

When politicians talk about the battle for hearts and minds in a conflict situation, they are usually talking about winning over the support of the local citizens caught in the war zone, though it could also apply to their own constituents, whose tacit approval allows the fighting to continue. In the Vietnam War, the phrase was a favourite of Lyndon Johnson, who believed that by supplying the Vietnamese with electricity and hope for a better future, the US could undermine support for the...
