Talk about ahead of its time!!! This films was one of the first portray arabs as not shifty, lowlifes but as heroes.

I loved the grainy photography, the editing and the Morricone soundtrack is sparse and rhymic.

Anyone who loves non-Hollywood classic will be fascinated in this film.

  • Fascinating and totally relevant

Definitely of interest to remind us how little things change, and for film buffs interested in film history too. Not simply 'one-sided', but a nuanced, rather than a completely balanced portrait of the pain and death meted out to innocents and the culpable in a very violent episode towards the end of European colonialism. I'd say this is essential viewing to partner Zero Dark Thirty or similar contemporary movies with mainly Eur-American protagonists.

  • Terrible Subtitles

The film is ok. But the subtitles are appauling, they stop in the middle of sentences with annoying regularity, particularly for those of us with rusty French. Please can someone correct this?

  • A must see for those interested in terrorism and its counters

    Rated - 4.5 stars
    By Paxton (29 reviews) , 20 Jan 2013
So well filmed it looks like a documentary, this film about the development and destruction of the Algerian terrorist movement against their French colonial masters is as important today as it was back at its release. Filmed from both the perspective of the terrorists/freedom fighters and the 'authorities' it gives what feels like an accurate portrayal of the battle between the two and evolving tactics. The historical conflict which the film is based upon is still regarded as a classic example of a terrorist cell defeated by systematic and brutal methods of state action, it is scary how little has changed fifty years on. Despite the subtitles and black and white film this movie will, if you give it a chance, grab your attention by its nuanced and multi faceted approach. In short a must see.

  • How to start a revolution - a guide

Interesting how ex French WWII militia respond to a crisis! Story builds without trying to influence the viewer. By the end of it one feels like one is in something by Sartre as it has become surreal - like all wars must feel after a certain while. Love the long shots of the town.

It was a bit difficult to get into at first, but this is an interesting and well made film about a subject I wasn't familiar with.
