Danny Boyle and Hollywood have a lot to answer for after butchering Alex Garland’s modern classic!

First off DiCaprio hams up the character of Richard. This I don’t understand. He is great in so many films! "Basket Ball Diaries", "What’s eating Gilbert grape", "Gangs of New York" and the list goes on. I think it was just awful casting, as the whole point of the Richard's character was that he was a geek! Spotty, ginger geek! That had more chance of loosing his eyesight from shaking hands with the governor of love than pulling the “love interest” in the story. But give a story to Hollywood and watch them disfigure it almost as much as the moviemakers did to the beach in Thailand to make the film!

It’s a shame, because there is so much potential there but it all fails to be delivered in this popcorn “oh isn’t Leo cute with his top off” trash!

There is one redeeming feature in that Robert Carlyle puts in a sterling performance as Daffy. One to avoid if you have read the book or if you actually like good films!

  • Different but good- well worth a watch

Loved this film; can't believe I left it so long before watching. It certainly was better than I expected and I'd recommend/ watch it again.

It starts with DiCaprio jet setting off on his own around the world & basically looking for something exciting. He meets a couple who join him in his search for a heavenly beach, after being told it exists by a scary/ mentalist Robert Carlyle. Why he wanted to visit anywhere Carlyle's character had been is beyond me, but he goes nonetheless.

DiCaprio's character begins as a hero; bagging himself a girlfriend, feeding the people with his shark catch, only for things to slowly start getting worse until he's an outcast. You follow him as he turns more and more insane, which is very humourous.

DiCaprio plays it great as you would expect, with excellent support from Swinton, possibly one of her first big films? You can see from the start she's going to be trouble.

Inspiring story to live for excitement/ new things/ new people, but just look before you leap.

  • One to watch while you do the ironing

Essentially interesting story spoiled by too much whooping and hollering, a disastrous musical soundtrack, and too many illogical inconsistencies, such as releasing flying lanterns to celebrate the arrival of newcomers -- arrivals which must be kept secret at all cost!

The stars partly reflect how good the book is but the film does it justice. It isn't often that a film captures the mood of a book so successfully but this did and it certainly deserves more than 3 stars overall. The depth of character development and insight into social structures and reactions is fantastic. Most definitely read the book, but watch the film too, they both deserve attention.
