Perfect beat.
By 4Tell (148 reviews) from Edgbaston , 10 Mar 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
I saw this at the cinema and loved it.
The central character is torn between his love of music and his violent life.
If you love to lose yourself in music you will find something to identify with in here.
I don't think there was a single bum note in the movie.
One of my favourites of 2005.- Was this review helpful to you?

(164)Bach is better than its bite
By Grenville (26 reviews) , 28 Apr 2013This is a pretty good film, despite the fact that the central character comes across as an unsympathetic character at the start of the film. The appeal lies in his attempts to change his life, aided and abetted by his piano teacher, making a compelling storyline and watchable movie.- Was this review helpful to you?

Love of music Vs life of crime
By gingerspike (410 reviews) from Grimsby , 05 Feb 2013A well crafted, and well acted, drama telling of the trials and tribulations of a man who wants to pursue his love of piano music (as his concert pianist mother), yet is surrounded by his involvement in violence and crime (following in the footsteps of his father). Well worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?

Mean and Moody
By tzec (65 reviews) , 17 Jul 2012Not the easiest film to watch as the violence seemed all pervading at times. Still, there was enough contrast to get me over this aspect, not bad overall.- Was this review helpful to you?

scene through a haze of Gaulois fog
By papatez (294 reviews) from folkestone , 08 Jul 2012I can forgive French cinema just about anything because that is what makes it so quirky and worth watching but I gradually became less interested in the story line and more and more obsessed with the number of cigarettes being smoked. Each scene opened with a new cigarette being lit and the director seemed to replace soft focus in emotive scenes with a haze of gently wafting smoke. I'm far from being a militant anti-smoker but it just got to me in the end and ruined what was probably a great movie. I hit the eject button and stubbed it out after an hour.- Was this review helpful to you?

Gritty and violent to sweet and melancholic
By Bassman71 (618 reviews) from Didsbury, England , 28 Jun 2012Real Estate heavy, on-off relationship with his Father, wants to re-start playing the piano, work getting in the way, Father has problems, son spreads himself thin.
Engrossing French drama which splits between gritty and violent to sweet and melancholic with Romain Duris excelling in the lead as the tormented Thomas.
It is very French in the whole feel of the film which gives it a certain grace in a way that only French films have and the music is beautiful throughout.- Was this review helpful to you?
