Powerful StuffBy HappyJack from SWANSEA , 05 Apr 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]I can't remember why I put this film in my wish list, but I'm very glad that I did. It`s a 60s cold war film made in black and white, starring Richard Widmark, who`s always a no nonsense actor, and another fine actor, the Denzel Washington of the day, Sidney Poitier.
Nice character development between the captain, the medical officer and the reporter and what an unexpected ending! Wow! They don`t make films like this anymore!

Less black & white than the remakeBy khambatta (16 reviews) , 21 Oct 2013
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideNow I know what Crimson Tide is a 're-imagining' of. Richard Widmark plays a far more rounded captain than Gene Hackman's cut-out, while Sydney Poitier's intrusive reporter is a more complex foil than Denzel Washington's nice-guy. Bedford Incident is a simpler film, with less chasing round in circles, less action, but less telegraphed, too. Stupid 60's ending lets it down.
Naval sub chase physco dramaBy bobsto (63 reviews) from Pangbourne , 19 Mar 2013Uttterly convincing and gripping cold war thriller set on 1960's destroyer. A relentless and aggressive US Navy commander pushes everyone to the limits of exhaustion and sanity ie his crew, a visiting reporter, a German technical advisor, and more importantly the crew of a Russian sub he is chasing. The time just flew past watching it. Even in the odd slow part there is lots of 1960's naval technology to admire Incidently an incident like this actually took place during the Cuban missile crisis. A Soviet sub almost launched a nuclear tipped torpedo under harrassment from the US Navy so its not a far fetched story.
Brilliant cold war scenarioBy Laidbacklad202 (1 review) , 31 Oct 2012A brilliantly gripping film with fantastic acting by Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier. Don't let the fact that it is black and white put you off. It won't.
Gripping film.By Nedvadead (86 reviews) from Ballymoney , 16 Jun 2012Loved this film from start to finish. Acting is pure class. The Story hooks you in leaving you sometimes tense and will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Ice Cold WarBy fredtheseagull (82 reviews) from Eastbourne , 01 Mar 2011The one negative review here can be ignored as it is not actually a film review.
I can't understand the rather negative star rating for this film. What do people want? I suspect there was not enough shooting
and explosions in it for some. For those who like suspense and a tghrill this film has it. Widmark is both enigmatic and frightening in the main role and the other characters feed into the growing sense of dread. The commodore is not what you expect, neither is the doctor. The ice cold setting also helps.
In all, a decent Cold War thriller.
