The Believer

Raised Jewish, Danny (Ryan Gosling) now runs with an anti-Semitic skinhead gang in Queens. Attending a meeting held by prominent self-proclaimed fascist Curtis Zampf (Billy Zane), Danny is noticed when he proposes killing Jews as a solution to society's problems. Danny's words create excitement not only for their racist content, but also for his articulate way of expressing himself and his knowledge of the Jewish faith. Zampf sees potential in Danny and takes him under his wing. Working with the enigmatic extremist, Danny meets the sadomasochistic Carla (Summer Phoenix). Between rough sexual encounters, Danny teaches Carla Hebrew and facts about Judaism. Carla becomes interested in the Jewish faith while Danny becomes disillusioned with his neo-Nazi lifestyle finding it as hypocritical as he found Judaism to be. Haunted by his past and questioning his own beliefs, Danny finds himself a prime suspect in the assassination of a respected Jewish figure.
Writer-director Henry Bean scored a success with this American independent focusing more on faith than hatred. THE BELIEVER won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for Best Screenplay and Best First Feature at the 2002 Independent Spirit Awards.

Though controversy and this true story drama may be inevitable bedfellows, screenwriter-turned-director Henry Bean's feature debut is no cheap-trick shocker. Instead, the story of Danny Balint, a young Jewish New Yorker who rejects his faith in favour of rabid fascism and a role as a neo-Nazi mouthpiece, makes its mark with rawness, intelligence and maturity. Devoid of sensationalism yet truly unnerving, the stomach-churning drama reinforces its grit with choppy camera work and grainy visuals. But, while this tints Bean's captivating tornado of fear, prejudice and shame with an art house hue, the Sundance-winning film retains a mainstream appeal. This is thanks to Ryan Gosling's enigmatic and blisteringly feral lead performance. Like Edward Norton's neo-Nazi turn in American History X and Russell Crowe's in Romper Stomper, it's Gosling's perfectly judged combination of domineering charm, hatred and inner pain that sets the screen alight. Despite many plot strings being left infuriatingly unresolved, The Believer remains a brave and powerful triumph of independent film-making.

  • "...The film provides horrific rushes generated in equal part by Bean's genuinely intellectually challenging screenplay and an outstanding performance by Ryan Gosling..."

    Believe...it could happen.

A non-mainstream film that deserves all the credit it is due. Based in part on a true life event, a young man is torn between hiding his Jewish upbringing and belonging to a Nazi-like extremist group. A tough emotional movie that will have you on the edge of your seat and leave you thinking about it for days afterwards. To say more than that will give too much away. The film can speak for itself and speak volumes it does.

That rare thing - a intellectually and politically complex, well written American movie

This really is an extraordinary film. It isn't surprising that American History X was more of a mainstream hit, while this gem got overlooked. The former, despite its violence, provides too-easy redemption and doesn't delve into the dark, complex world of Western racism that The Believer inhabits so fully. It also doesn't implicate the middle classes - as The Believer does. Yes, this film is uncomfortable viewing. Would it not amoral to make a film about race hate that isn't? Ryan Gosing is terrific (as is Ed Norton in American History X) but this isn't a showcase for him. The star of this film is the script and that's a rare enough thing nowadays to make it something everyone should see.
