A lightweight version of the much grittier long-running Broadway musical with Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds, two performers noted for their sex appeal, failing to ignite the proper sparks. Parton plays the madam of the Chicken Ranch brothel, who comes to blows with her sheriff lover (Reynolds) when TV evangelist Dom DeLuise tries to close the place down. Some great routines (the stunning opening number, Charles Durning's The Side Step), augmented with new songs (the first movie appearance of I Will Always Love You, which Whitney Houston sang in The Bodyguard, here sung by Parton) keeps everything on a lively and likeable keel.
Flat and feeble screen version of a limp and tuneless musical which astonishingly was a Broadway hit, perhaps because people thought it was naughty. Onscreen the acting is too easy-going and the script too coy for anybody to have a good time.
I must have watched this film a hundred times when I was a kid, but this was the first time I have seen it in years.
It is a bit dated, very eighties, but still a whole lot of fun, and if you don't cry when Dolly sings 'I Will Always Love You' to Burt Reynolds, you are clinically dead.
Dolly is the best Tart with a heart ever, running her brothel that is the centre of the community. Burt is great as the copper turning a blind eye. Dom DeLousise is hilarious as the sensationalist TV reporter who wants the Chicken Ranch closed down to further his own career, preaching truth and honesty while sticking a sock down his trousers.
However,if you are looking for smut, look elsewhere, because 'There's nothing Dirty Going on'
This film is just a light hearted fun musical which leaves the viewer with a smile. The unbalancing contrast between the well choreographed, frenetic song and dance sequences and the quiet scenes in which Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds appear to ad-lib the lines is the only area of criticism. I have rented this film on several occasions over the years and always enjoy it.
