One of the best Westerns........a film to watch whether you like the genre or not
By roncoach (365 reviews) from suffolk , 24 Oct 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
This has to be in the Top 50 or perhaps100 best westerns ever made. It is also something of an epic with lavish production values and wonderfully casted big star names all putting in memorable performances------including the 2 leading actors , 2 leading actresses, and the 2 ageing protagonists. I'd single out Gregory Peck for special mention.
It is a film for anyone who enjoys very good films......ladies need not be put off by the category of 'western' ( indeed, far from it-------the marvellous Jean Simmons and the perfectly cast and pretty good performance from Carol Baker give testimony to that).
So this is the plot : first, take 2 warring old men who seem to own half of the American West LOL; second , add a sefaring young man who comes a callin' on a spoilt southern little rich girl............and then sit back and enjoy a screen spectacular.
Highly recommended to anyone who likes big films, a big sprawling epic........a Big Country.- Was this review helpful to you?

(20)Great movie
By a customer , 04 May 2013A very fine, intelligent Western. Imagine a pacifist arriving out west! He won't carry a gun or fight the local bullies. A great idea which is developed beautifully by both the actors and director. I just have to comment of William Wyler's use of long shots - he pulls way back at the most dramatic moments to brilliant effect. Worth seeing more than once.- Was this review helpful to you?

A Timeless Classic
By Alfafan (2 reviews) , 06 Jan 2013I dug this out again and was once again entranced. This has to be my favourite film ever. It's almost impossible to single out the best actor, but Burl ives just tips it for me. The music, the scenery, everything about it is superb. I first saw this in 1959, and my love of it became a family joke. But for a 53 year old film, it remains brilliant.- Was this review helpful to you?

It's a big movie!
By ansonort (21 reviews) from London , 04 Jun 2011I think this is my favourite western movie and just pips The Searchers and The Magnificent Seven to the number one spot. The cinematography in this movie is outstanding and really gives you that feeling of wide-open prarie.
The central performances are all very good - especially Gregory Peck's 'quiet man of dignity' and Burl Ives rough diamond with a strong sense of honour. Even Chuck Heston manages to turn in some interesting nuances.
Great music too - one of the best themes to a western ever!- Was this review helpful to you?
