A second rate rip-off of the humorous hitman gem Grosse Pointe Blank, this action thriller tries very hard to be offbeat and quirky, but ends up as merely dumb and annoying. Mark Wahlberg does well as the girl-juggling assassin, though Lou Diamond Phillips overdoes his performance as Wahlberg's accomplice. To be fair, though, any actor who tries to give of their best from this calibre of script is flogging a dead horse. Despite a dazzling pair of slam-bang action bookends from director Kirk Wong, it's just not clever, funny or engaging enough to be the exercise in killer cool it clearly craves to be.
All the hallmarks of Hong Kong action films, with their gun-battles and intricately choreographed mayhem, are here translated to an American setting, with the addition of wisecracking gangsters and sick jokes.
Well there was I expecting an action comedy with a Hong Kong twist. Well there was a bit of action but no comedy. If you want an Hong Kong action comedy catch one of the shanghai movies, this is definitely one to avoid despite the recognisable cast as the script is rubbish and not enjoyable at all.
A film about a hitman who hates to be disliked. Has the potential to be brilliant, but Mark Wahlberg just has absolutely no personality on screen.
If you want to sit down and watch a film without having to think too much, this is the film for you, if you are more like me and want a little more than mindless explosions and gun fights, stay well clear.
