Enzo Castellari directs this bloody crime drama about a police inspector who delivers his own brand of justice to a town terrorized by a gang of local criminals. Officer Nico Palmieri (Fabio Testi) is investigating the extortion and violence inflicted upon a sleepy Italian village, where the inhabitants live in such fear that only one of them dares to speak out against the thugs. When the young daughter of this informant is brutally raped in retaliation, Palmieri assembles a vigilante group of victims to do battle with the gang in a blood-soaked final showdown. Undoubtedly Castellari's most violent film, THE BIG RACKET also serves as a political comment on the corruption and terrorism that plagued Italy during the 1970s.

Enzo G. Castellari's The Big Racket (Il Grande Racket) is a high-point of the Poliziotteschi (Italian cop) genre. The staple of these films were violent, fascist cops beating, shooting and generally breaking every rule in the book to get the bad guys. The bad guys were generally presented as the evilest scum you'd ever seen in your life. The kind of guys who would murder a pregnant woman in cold blood during a botched bank raid (see Violent Professionals) or push a granny down a flight of stairs just for the hell of it! (see Violent Naples) The star of this genre was undoubtedly Maurizio Merli, he's not in this one but it doesn't stop it fom being one of the best examples. Fabio Testi is the cop on a mission to smash a violent protection racket using any means necessary! Packed with bloody shoot-outs, car chases, explosions and vicious beatings (from both sides of the law of course!) Castellari directs with style and verve, also dig that great score from the DeAngelis brothers!
If you like your films poorly acted, badly dubbed and action packed(ish), then this is the film for you! The best thing about it is watching the cast of Italian extras making the most of their few moments of celluloid fame by 'slightly' exaggerating their 'death by bullet' - hilarious!!
