The last of five MGM comedies by the Marx Brothers, this has more plot than is usual for them. They play ramshackle detectives hired to guard a vast emporium in which customers take second place to the various under-the-counter shenanigans, in which the Brothers participate. As usual, Groucho woos massive Margaret Dumont, with insult amounting to injury but, more unusually, the romantic subplot is let loose, and allows Tony Martin to sing Tenement Symphony. Corny, but confident.
Reckoned to be the Marx Brothers' weakest MGM vehicle, but it has its moments, especially the first reel and the bedding department scene, also Groucho's rendering of 'Sing While You Sell'.
The marx brothers were so far ahead of their time it's unbelievable. it's got slapstick, music and razor sharp wit that comedians nowadays wish they had. this and a night at the opera stand out as their best work and any comedy fan has to get them out.
