The quality of the transfer on this disc shows what can be done, even with low budget stuff like this, if proper care is taken. The print looks incredible even compared to dvds of major films from the same period - colours and details are spot on. The only blemishes on the print seem to be those inherited from the master print itself. The dvd is 4:3 letterboxed only, so widescreen viewers will need to hit the zoom button as the dvd is not widescreen enhanced.

As to the film itself, well it's good to see Patrick Magee in fine bonkers form - and Mimsy Farmer too for that matter - and the cat puts in a cracking performance. Give that moggy an oscar!

One warning - this dvd forces you to watch a number of trailers before starting the main film. How they got past the bbfc censors I do not know since the first one (New Yorker Killer) seems to consist of nothing else but brutal and sexually explicit attacks on various women, including a particularly nasty one involving a broken bottle being rammed against a female victim. The other trailers are not much better - apart from a very silly one for Venus In Furs!

  • Boring, mundane! Not a patch on some of his others!

I have enjoyed quite a few Lucio Fulci films, eg The Beyond, and of course, Zombie Flesh Eaters, but I really thought this offering was rather dull. It really didn't live up to the Fulci expectations, apart from maintaining his style of filming and managing to create a little atmosphere, the film and plotline was boring to be honest. He has made much better films than this and to annoy us a little more, the ending was hardly worth waiting for at all. I won't go into it and contain spoilers because it's not worth it. Spent enough time on this film already. If you are a hardened Fulci fan, you may enjoy the filming and the usual really good use of low budget special effects, but if not I can only recommend that you avoid and move on. It feels unfortunate to slate this film as I have enjoyed a lot of his other work, but I can't lie just because it's his.

A good picture - with more restraint it could have been very good. There was a lot of atmosphere and tension throughout, but the effect of atmosphere was too often spoilt by the desire for graphic horror - totally unnecessary in a film like this, and a more accomplished director would have foregone the indulgence. With the exception of the too smooth detective, the cast was excellent, with a glowering central performance at the heart of it. The music was unobtrusive and not excessive and the lighting and camerawork spot on (though with the occasional tendency to dwell too long on a shot, meaning that tension turned into tedium). The story was based very vaguely on Poe (in fact, two stories), and the climax was taken - more or less - directly from him. A very enjoyable watching experience.

  • Very disappointing

This is really not up to the level of other Fulci films I've seen. The Edgar Allen Poe link is quite tenuous and badly realised and the cat itself just isn't the slightest bit scary - in fact it's laughable. Interesting to see an English village location for this film but that's about it.
