The most distinguished element of this medium-rated Disney animation, from a Tolkien-like series by Lloyd Alexander, is the solemn intonation of narrator John Huston. Otherwise, it's standard stuff about likeable teenagers (of course!) trying to stop the Horned King and co from using a magic cauldron to raise an Army of the Dead. As swords-and-sorcery, it's potboiling stuff.

    superb.........

my daughter Bethany loved this dvd. It is funny and it has a great story of magic and sorcery.

however it could be a bit scary for younger children, so parental monitoring is needed.

    A great forgotten classic

This Disney classic is one that I have only recently heard of, and as a result had to watch. The story centres around an assistant pig-keeper, Taran, the Horned-King, a pig called Hen-Wen (?!) and the Black Cauldron. The villain of the piece, the Horned-King is petrifying. Easily the scariest Disney villain I’ve ever come across (puts Jafar and Maleficent to shame). Not too sure how small children could watch this film. If you are renting it for your children, I suggest watching it first to see if they will get upset. Overall, not too sure why Disney ‘forgets’ about this film (especially with the adorable Gurgi – a competitor for Stitch if I ever saw one) as it is a great watch
