...was the first film my parents let watch myself which at the time was unheard of.

A truly magical film with excellent dark undertones for essentially a childrens film. Good cast, some primitive special effects but a whirling stand out soundtrack which is fantastic. I still like the heaven and hell ending (depsite not really getting it when I was younger). Must see (on a Sunday afternoon).

...this film will only be watched by my generation on a nostalgia trip. Today's kids get better graphics on their blackberries. If you sat a modern youth down to watch this he'd be on Facebook bullying a classmate before the opening credits had stopped. Nevertheless my generation is still in love with this film because Disney made a genuinely dark children's film, which for a 10 year old in the eighties was scary. The material is ready for remake.

I remember this film from when I saw it as a kid. I was suprised how well it stood the test of time. Decent sci-fi, humour, reasonable special effects, and the odd bit of dark. Much recommended.

  • Darkly-toned Disney almost works...

As if to cash in on the phenomena that was 'Star Wars', the Disney studios poured a lot of money (and creative production) into this sci-fi epic, with a top-name cast and (for its time) top-line effects. I think everyone has seen this film at some stage in their life, though most likely the dreadful pan-n-scan version put out on TV. Seeing the film for the first time in a nicely cleaned up widescreen version does make a difference, though it all appears terribly twee now compared to sci-fi films now with their CGI effects. The dark tone of the film is still there and still works (seeing the human face behind the robot mask still shocks), though Disney's cringingly-bad Hell for the bad-Heaven for the good ending grates.

For Disney movie it is quite adventurous and probably better than Space 1999. Not camp like Buck Rogers, not collosal like Star Wars, and not moody like Alien. I kind of liked When Worlds Collide better.

Ok, but just a typical Disney kids film from the 70s.
