Peter Cushing once (or possibly more) said that this was the worst film he ever appeared in, and, considering he starred in some pretty dodgy efforts between the 1950s and 1970s, this is quite some statement.

Actually, I'm delighted to say it's a small-scale masterpiece with some genuine shocks and a fantastic script.

Not really. It's slow, dull and features some iffy special effects. That said, it's pretty standard low-budget British horror fare although the film looks as if it were made on a budget of about £2.50 and, whilst Cushing is always reliable, the girl who plays his daughter - I can't even be bothered to look up her name - is amazingly rubbish. Basically, the complex plot involves some mysterious murders taking place 'somewhere in England.' Yes, there. Nobody can figure out what's going on until Detective Inspector Quennell (Cushing) arrives to sort out the problems and establish that a kind-of female moth is behind the slayings.

If low budget, sixties-set British movies featuring some strange virus/creature/crazed human going about killing people is your cup of tea and it must also have a brandy-sipping, well-educated and gentlemanly Peter Cushing in there uttering masterful lines such as 'I think I will retire for the evening my dear fellow,' try 'Island of Teror' instead, made several years later. It's better.
