Between a rock and a hard place
By a customer from Bolton, England , 24 Sep 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
'Maxi' Oliveros is a flamboyantly effeminate 12 year old boy living in Manila with his widowed petty criminal father and two adult brothers who develops an adolescent crush on a new local policeman. This is not a 'gay' film, sexuality being relevant only in setting up the central theme of loyalties torn between his family and the (straight) object of his affection. It's a sweet little film, well acted with a marvelous central performance.- Was this review helpful to you?

(15)Felt a little nauseous with the bad camera work.
By JonathanWelfordcom (34 reviews) from Manchester , 02 May 2012I switched this off after 20 minutes, the editing and camera work made me feel like it was a technicolor version of Blair Witch!
The story is probably very good, going on the previous reviewers.
The 20 minutes I saw could have been edited down into 3-4 minutes.- Was this review helpful to you?

An interesting insight into a less desirable lifestyle
By a customer , 13 Dec 2011I enjoyed this!
The film provided an interesting insight into impoverished city life seen through the eyes of a young boy. The relationship with the policeman and the possibility of an alternative life further complicated matters due to the pressure from his father and elder siblings to continue along their current path.
Particularly robust acting on the part of the young lad.- Was this review helpful to you?

Best gay-themed movie from Philippines.
By formidible (1 review) , 19 Aug 2011One of the best gay themed movies to come out of Asia for a very long time. Memorable performances and sensitively directed it shows that no matter what your background or character you can emerge from difficult and troubled times with true dignity and maturation. Very life-affirming.- Was this review helpful to you?

Camp schoolboy in Manila
By MikeLaughton (112 reviews) from Oakham,England , 13 Apr 2011Low budget Filipino film about an ultra-camp school-age boy who develops a crush on a cop as he reaches puberty. Unfortunately the kid is also the son of a crime lord.
Could have been a much better movie if made in Hollywood by top professionals with a bigger budget.
Very little in the way of daring or controversial scenes and the kid playing the camp boy is way over the top.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good direction and acting.
By James from Brighton , 12 Nov 2010Quite a good film from the phillipines. On par with good direction and acting alike Slumdog millionaire. An insidght to how people live and that in that country. And the level of curruption that goes on there. Sweet tale, all innocent and it worked well as there was a good underlying storyline. Good direction and cinematography.- Was this review helpful to you?
