    [Highly rated reviewer]

The Blue Dahlia is an old film and yes it is dated in the style of dress and the people in the supporting cast, but it still tells a good yarn and set the precedent for many modern films. Probably Alan Ladd's best film after Shane, keeps you guessing for most of the time. Probably a low budget film of the day, but puts several big budget films to shame. Worth a look just to see a film with dialogue!

  • Ladd's best

It is generally considered that , given Alan Ladd's limitations as an actor, his finest moment came with Shane. I disagree. The Blue Dahlia, apart from being one of the great film noirs, proves what an underrated actor Ladd really was. Watch his reaction to his wife's (a great performance from Doris Dowling) admission that she was responsible for their son's death. His mixture of disgust, grief and anger is superbly handled.

The cast is full of excellent performances from William Bendix's mentally damaged war veteran, to the stunning Veronica Lake . However, for me, it is Ladd's determined but vulnerable hero who holds it all together . A classic.

  • Nice one, Alan Ladd

As a relatively routine vehicle for the pairing of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake, this film noir provides lots of variety to entertain and is marked by an agreeably light and assured performance from Alan Ladd. William Bendix, quite high up on the cast list, is as usual desperately difficult to take a liking to as an actor, despite all his professionalism.

Ex-bomber pilot Alan Ladd returns from the war with his two navy veteran buddies and finds himself searching for the murderer of his decietful, drunken wife. The Blue Dahlia was Raymond Chandler's only film screenplay, as opposed to adaptations of his novels, but the American Navy were unhappy with the possibilty of one of their own boys as a potential murderer and forced a revision of the original plot which results in a disappointing film which isn't helped by George Marshall's indistinct direction. The film does feature some good performances and typically smart dialogue but it lacks any grit or urgency.
