During World War I, the Blue Max, a coveted medal for achievement in flying, is ruthlessly sought by Bruno Satchel (George Peppard), a poor-boy German soldier who climbs out of the trenches and into the aristocratic air force. He is met with prejudice by the other contestants, wealthy snobs who look down upon his low economic stature. When he claims the title, he earns the respect of the general (James Mason) and the general's wife (Ursula Andress), who wants to repay him in ways that the General might not appreciate. Fantastic aerial combat highlights the film, and the scenes between the two lovers don't hurt matters much.

For once, an action spectacular not too badly let down by its connecting threads of plot, apart from some hilarious and unnecessary bedroom scenes in which the female star's bath towel seems to become conveniently adhesive.

Childhood Favourite that doesn't disappoint
I watched this again for the first time in 25 years and found to my relief that The Blue Max was actually better than I remember it as a jaded 15 year old.. ... read more »
There haven't been many WWI dogfight movies since I dunno The Blue Max? A popular genre in the 1920s and 30s (you will recall Leonardo DiCaprio's Howard Hughes going for broke in The Aviator) it fell by the wayside after WWII for all the obvious reasons. You would imagine that the primary motivation to revive the genre today would be to reflect on current events in some form. But maybe not: Flyboys harks back to such unfashionable ideas about heroism and war, it might have been written in 1916 Read more
