    [Highly rated reviewer]

Starts off interesting then concentrates on the actual train, it's facilities and the amount of work and effort the staff put in before, during and after the journey.

Does not focus too much on the scenic beauty and the destinations it covers, but largely focuses on the train itself.

    Not what I was expecting

  • Interesting or disappointing, dependant on your point of view!

As a travelogue for the RSA, was interesting but of course only covered the 2 Blue train routes; 2001 made. Then didn't explain why the (new) train was off route at Victoria Falls, with good arial shots of the Falls mid film! Johannesburg not even mentioned, why not?

For a railway buff, good but didn't go far enough. Didn't show what stock, if any, was left at De Aar, in the graveyard - nor show any past photos of it. But if I recall (from '74), the line went past - or there could have been a film excursion. However, managed to give a short clip of the first Blue train - well done.

No mention of the old blue train (green livery) run from Durban to the Jhb either (is it still run? There was a shot of a green coach in Pretoria sidings). Apart from a class 24 in steam at Knysna (Outeniqua Choo Choo), used to be older classes here too. No other steam mentioned - nor did it say that the non-electified bits were steam hauled anyway until late 90's (when?). One good shot of a preserved static at Klerksdorp visible from the train. But there could be more shown, perhaps - as most stations had one in the open; not mentioned. RSA is/was a gold mine, literally for Live Steam: Not a murmur from the script!

The RSA is a haven for both the scenic traveller, and the Rail buff. Didn't go far enough on either front - merely scratched the surface.
