Fraternal twins Conner (Flanery - SUICIDE KINGS) and Murphey (Reedus - GOSSIP) MacMannus are on a mission from God to rid Boston of crime. However, instead of signing up for the police force, these hard-drinking Irish-American brothers take the law into their own hands a la Charles Bronson in DEATH WISH. Heralded as saints by the city's beleaguered residents, the brothers also attract the attention of Paul Smecker (Defoe - EXISTENZ), the openly gay FBI special agent assigned to investigate the spate of killings amongst the ranks of the Russian mafia. First-time director Duffy pulls out all the breaks in this inventive, action-packed thriller sure to please fans of HARD BOILED and RESERVOIR DOGS.

A dated — surely Reservoir Dogs must now be passé inspiration for young film-makers? — annoyingly stylised crime thriller which also succeeds in producing one of Willem Dafoe's most embarrassing screen performances. Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus are the saints of the title, a couple of working class lads from Boston?s Irish community who, for no particular reason, embark on a bloody vigilante rampage against Mafia types. Dafoe is the gay FBI agent who begins to develop a grudging admiration for the young killers. Writer/director Troy Duffy delivers some striking actions scenes but the carnage long overstays its welcome. He also seems to have little idea how to get any sort of performances from an impressive cast (Billy Connolly also pops up as a master assassin). Dafoe's over-the-top turn will make fans wince, but the performances are uniformly hysterical, with David Della Rocco, as the brothers' Mafia-connected partner, being the worst of a bad bunch.
It is criminal how this film passed me by at the cinema!! I regularly read Empire and must have missed their review. But to all who are Umming and Ahhhing, dont think, just rent this film. It is a cracking little film about two irish american brothers who decide that they must punish the guilty in the name of God, and mercilessly so. With a superbly acted support in the form of gay/transvestite cop Willem Dafoe who is on their trail, but all the time questioning his and their own motives. This film starts fast (with a score that puts me in mind of Run Lola Run) and keeps on going, with only a slightly slow mid point, but soon finds itself again to end well. The only bad thing i can say is that the DVD is devoid of any extras, which is a true shame, if any film deserves extras this one does. A great film well worth watching........................ .. still here? Go watch it!!
absolue rubbish. To be avoided.
