When Lenny Brown is recruited to go to Los Angeles and hustle real estate, he jumps at the opportunity -- especially since it will give him enough money to keep him in cocaine. But when Congress looks into changing the tax laws that got his company rich, a nervous Lenny makes off with the result: no more employment and no more money for coke. So Lenny steals $20,000 from his boss, and moves to Santa Cruz for self-imposed detox. However, the plan fails miserably when his dealer stops by to party and Lenny just can't keep his hands off of the drug.

Better known for the rumours behind the scenes than for the action in front of the camera (during the filming stars Sean Young and James Woods allegedly had an affair which ended rather bitterly in lawsuits), this overlooked drama from director Harold Becker who also made the excellent Sea of Love and City Hall, has moments of insight in between the screaming matches. Based on the book Ludes by Benjamin Stein, the film catalogues a couple's descent into drug addiction and disaster. Although more time is spent banging home the anti-drug message than on developing character, both Woods (as always) and Young give gutsy enough performances to lift the film above the dismal and completely depressing.
A well-crafted, hard-hitting look at an ideal marriage torn apart by personal insecurity, material greed and designer... read more on Time Out
Well, you could't really have the anti-drugs message driven home more forcefully - this film just keeps grinding you down. Its like a horror - you think 'No, don't do that!' but you know they will and it always ends in disaster. Woods rounds out his character but unfortunately Young has her work cut out as a rather dull supportive wife. Not a film I'd watch again but worthwhile in its way.
Excellent film, shows how drugs can affect your life, what we liked was the fact it does not glorify drug taking and gives a powerful message in the end, well recommended!
