A WELCOME REAPPRAISAL OF AN UNDER-RATED MOVIE!
By PAUL JOHNSON from Port Talbot, South Wales. , 10 Mar 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
I first saw this on sad old VHS (remember that!) back in 1988 when it first came out and the movie left a searing impression on me.Now that I've seen it again as an older viewer,it still packs a powerful punch.I disagree that the anti-drugs message overtakes plot and character development. On the contrary,Woods and Young turn in such believable performances that you can't help but care when things fall apart. The film is as much about how life's rug can be pulled out from under your feet as much as the folly of drugtaking.Who's to say that we all wouldn't react like Lenny Brown when his world crumbles? Aside from Woods and Young (ain't she gorgeous!),there is also a cracking turn from the appallingly underseen Steven Hill as Max Sherman,Lenny's mentor.Of course all this is held together by director Harold Becker, better known for Sea of Love.Although the melodrama is occasionally overcooked, his direction is solid.I'm glad that I caught up with this movie again. That it still packs an emotional wallop 18 years later is proof that The Boost is a genuinely fine film.As for the DVD,the only special feature is a theatrical trailer which is a shame. The Region 1 disc has deleted scenes and audio commentary with Woods and Becker and I think it will soon be heading for my collection!- Was this review helpful to you?

(6)The Boost
By a customer from SUFFOLK , 15 Jun 2010Although I don't usually like drug-related scenarios in films, I found this one very watchable. James Woods, always a competent actor, played the part of an over optimistic acheiver, who gradually declines into drugged oblivion, with great conviction. Sean Young who I always enjoy seeing, played his wife, who enables him to deteriorate. Very good!- Was this review helpful to you?

the boost
By a customer from england , 24 Sep 2007Excellent film, shows how drugs can affect your life, what we liked was the fact it does not glorify drug taking and gives a powerful message in the end, well recommended!- Was this review helpful to you?

Just say no...
By Darth Egregious from London , 16 Dec 2005Well, you could't really have the anti-drugs message driven home more forcefully - this film just keeps grinding you down. Its like a horror - you think 'No, don't do that!' but you know they will and it always ends in disaster. Woods rounds out his character but unfortunately Young has her work cut out as a rather dull supportive wife. Not a film I'd watch again but worthwhile in its way.- Was this review helpful to you?
