Tense chase thriller that provides moderate entertainment, though, after an intriguing opening sequence, its narrative becomes ponderously predictable.
It was really good to see a good old fashioned quality Euro-thriller after watching so many boring US locations on film time after time. Paris provides a great backdrop to the excellent story and action, with Matt Damon doing a fine job in an action role firing guns and kicking ass in superb (albeit speeded up) fight scenes.
Along with a uniformly strong cast this all adds up to one of the better thrillers of recent years.
Robert Ludlum's classy novel is well adapted for film in this taut, intelligent and well-acted film. Matt Damon's performance is particularly impressive, as the hunted Bourne.
The film works best in the first 80 minutes or so, as the viewer gradually realises what is going on, and the tension comes from not being quite sure. The last half-hour or so loses this tight framework and it turns into a fairly run-of-the-mill and predictable cop action movie.
So this is an excellent film, but... it disappoints in the last third. Most viewers will find that the opening sequences and the main guts of the film more than make up for the average ending, however.
But what a naff last scene, eh?
