Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father) directed this drama about a Belfast boxer, filmed with Dublin locations substituting for Belfast. Released after his 14-year prison sentence for IRA activities, 32-year-old Danny Flynn (Daniel Day-Lewis) returns to his old neighborhood and sees former-flame Maggie (Emily Watson), who has an unhappy marriage and now raises her son alone while her husband is in prison. To get back in the boxing ring, Danny gets the community-center gym back in operation and starts training, encountering opposition from militant IRA members, including Harry (Gerald McSorley). Danny and Maggie grow closer, but after a bomb sets off events leading to the destruction of the gym, Danny leaves for a disastrous boxing match in London. A wonderful cast is headed by Daniel Day-Lewis in one of the best films relating to the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland.

excellent film, brutal, well written and superb acting. Daniel Day Lewis is, as ever, fantastic as to is Emily Watson

Daniel Day Lewis.....

The Boxer is a solid enough movie that somehow doesn't quite rise as high as you think it might. However, Daniel Day Lewis is simply a Great Actor. Anything with him in it is worth watching.

Quite intense - but I was pleasantly surprised.

This film goes beyond the traditional story with the Irish political issues as a backdrop.

The plot is well woven and gives you not only a sense of the political and violent environment, but you also feel, that despite all the chaos around, there is a form of social order and codes that must not be transgressed and against or within which the two main characters have to fit in.

The performance of the cast is amazing which actually engages you as a viewer. Daniel Day Lewis of course, is simply mind blowing, but there's also an incredible chemistry with those he also shares the lead.

Terrible attempts at Irish accents

Was really looking forwards to renting this movie as a friend of my wifes played a role in it. After about five minutes of terrible fake irishs accents I regreted odering it. Filmed in Dublin it featured no visual referances to Belfast what so ever. Dispite its great cast it disappointed
