The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas
By a customer from Stockport , 13 Sep 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
I highly recommend this film, which has narrowly missed my 5* rating, simply due to the fact that it is set in Germany, so it should have either been spoken in German with subtitles, or the actors should have had a German accent at least. It spoiled it for me that they spoke with a plain English accent. Also the little boy played by Asa Butterfield is a brilliant actor, however I couldn't help but think he didn't look like a little German boy. Hitler wanted children to have blond hair, so I am surprised they didn't dye his hair blond for the part, to fit in with the Nazi point of view.
Set during World War 2, the story is seen though the innocent eyes of a little boy, whose father is promoted to Nazi Commandant, which brings with it a new house for him and his family. The little boy is forbidden to go to the back of his house, where he sees strange people dressed in striped pyjamas working on what looks to him like a farm. A little adventurer with a big imagination, the German boy is bored of having no one to play with, and he ignores what he is told, and goes and explores for himself. He befriends a Jewish boy on the other side of the fence and they form an everlasting friendship, which has startling and unexpected consequences for the German boy and his family.- Was this review helpful to you?

(1481)A great film
By a customer , 27 May 2013Irish author John Boyne offered us a novel that is poetic, horrific and incandescent in it's youthful innocence of a very difficult topic. The film adaptation of his book reflects this, adult protagonists are played up, and the young actors are exuberant in their portrayal of their characters. This is a film that brought to me the horror of genocide, evoked pity, love and anger. A great film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Thought provoking
By duduanna (12 reviews) , 20 May 2013This film is gripping from the start as you don't really know where its going to take you. The characters are strong and the soldiers menacing, with the other family members living on the fringes of their fathers true work and their ultimate discovery very believable. Well cast.- Was this review helpful to you?

Harrowing, galling. Beautiful, and tragic.
By AtomicPuppy (9 reviews) from Essex, England , 12 May 2013Utterly harrowing. I was drawn in from the start. Refreshing to see a war film from a different perspective - through the eyes of innocents. The end left me feeling physically sick - and I'm glad it did, because to not feel sick at what happened at that time is to be inhuman. I don't think I can watch this a second time though.- Was this review helpful to you?

A wonderfully haunting and harrowing tale
By Cashplays (47 reviews) , 08 May 2013One of the most harrowing, depressing and thoughtful war films I've ever seen. The simple idea of the hideous horror of war seen through the eyes of an innocent child as his family is torn apart by duty, morality and hypocrisy. It is heart achingly touching and will make you shed a tear or two by the end. Everybody does a brilliant job with their roles and the whole film holds together nicely. All together it is a great film. Watch it and love it.- Was this review helpful to you?
