When one of his proteges locates the elusive Nazi war criminal Dr. Josef Mengele (Peck), famed Nazi hunter Ezra Lieberman (a wonderful Olivier) stumbles on Mengele's grand scheme to murder 94 seemingly unconnected men -- a scheme that could somehow launch the Fourth Reich.

Undercast (and in desperate need of colour), this jolly romp is the filmisation of Rodgers and Hart's Broadway hit, itself based on Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors, and boasting two of the all-time great popular standards This Can't Be Love and Falling in Love with Love. Only Martha Raye and Joe Penner seem to capture the requisite Broadway brashness, and a wan Allan Jones in the lead looks uncomfortable and strained. Many of the ancient jokes pre-date similar humoresques in The Flintstones, and period comedians Charles Butterworth and Eric Blore have a camp old time mining the gags. Connoisseurs will note that three songs have been dropped from the show score and two new ones added for the screen.
"...THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL is a good job....One of those films where you get a bag of popcorn and settle back to a make-believe world..."
I had a conversation with a good friend recently about older movies with interesting ideas at there core but way too much stationary dialouge, ambling plot and lousy action sequences. He was talking about 70's sci fi staples as a whole but he could very well have been reviewing The Boys From Brazil.
It's a great idea. It would have made a corking X-File episode. But bar laughing at 'Zee Outrageous Accents' and rewinding Steve Guttenburgs sticky end there's little ZING! about proceedings.
I'm sure this movie has just 'not aged well' as the films reputation as a 'Mind Blower' preceeds it with aplomb.
This movie is ripe for a remake. It has some solid character actors doing their stuff. But it just moves at a snails pace. And looks dull.
I had wanted to see this film for quite sometime now and knowing that it was available on Bluray I had to rent it. The story is very good and I can see Hollywood remaking it. Now dont get me wrong, Laurence Olivier is considered one of the greatest actors of all time, I just felt that he over acted in this making the rest of the cast look fantastic, apart from a young Steve Guttenburg. Olivier wound me up to be quite honest. All in all its a good film that will keep you watching until the end although very dated.
