Johnny Depp's eclectic career has seen collaborations with a host of deeply idiosyncratic directors, from Jim Jarmusch and Tim Burton to Roman Polanski and Emir Kusturica. His own directing debut, however, displays little of their flair. It's a muddled and pretentious affair about a native American (played by Depp) who agrees to star in a real-life snuff film in order to provide for his family. Marlon Brando, who appeared alongside Depp in Don Juan DeMarco, co-stars in a movie that premiered at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival and quickly sunk without trace.

Meaningful and thought provoking. Fantastic performance from Depp.

Very disturbibg due to it's brutal honesty about the way society forces some native american's to live. The movie focuses on one family's struggle to survive and in particular one man's sacrifice to provide them with a better life. Depp's character offers himself to star in a snuff film where he will be tortured to death. Don't watch this movie hoping to see torture and brutality - this movie is about the relationships and struggles that drive one man to make the ultimate sacrifaice. I was hoping and praying towards the end of this movie that Depp would somehow get out of his deal and find a better way forward...... This movie affected me for days afterwards. Still get a strange feeling thinking of it. Not to be missed, especially if you are a Depp fan.

    THE BRAVE-DIRECTOR/ACTOR JOHHNY DEPP

I read the story line and thought it might be too gorey for me but we never got to Johhny Depp being tortured to death (thank goodness).

    I enjoyed this film.

The film is about relationships and sacrifice. (It's not for the mainstream).

It's a slow paced drama that explores the concepts of marriage and, more importantly, life and death.

Not a good one to go to bed on!!

Purely because this film stays with you for a while.

It's beautifully handled and Johnny Depp is superb and there is gentle humour to take the edge off the haunting situation. The film certainly makes its point regarding the way the Native Americans have been exploited and abused. Very sobering.

Definitely worth watching, it is pure class, but not exactly family entertainment. Not to appear glib, but probably best to line up a good comedy to follow.

I have to say I am very impressed, I usualy overlook films that are directed by actors (but for Johnny Depp I will always make an exception!) but this is surprisingly good! Maybe a bit too long but the cast was excellent (apart from the bloke who was obviously breathing after being killed) and the direction great. Hope Depp has plans to take a turn behind the camera again!

    Very Moving

This is an honest look at how some native americans are treated by society and how they are forced to live. This follows the desperation of one man to provide for his family. He is willing to sacrafice his own life to better theirs. Throught provoking and very sad. Great performance from Depp.

    A beautiful film....

This is a movie I have wanted to see since i became a Johnny Depp fan. I'm glad I watched it alone - no one could see me in tears. A beautiful, moving film which shows how one man makes the ultimate sacrifice for his family. There are strong performances from Johnny, and Marlon Brando is just plain creepy!!

The last scenes are both a cry for help and the realisation of what is about to happen.

Watch with a box of Kleenex.

    Depp Wins Marks for Bravery

Johnny Depp's directorial debut named the Brave actually sums up this entire filmmaking effort; The Brave is a story of a troubled Native American alcoholic family man who seeks redemption is sacrificing his life for his wife and children’s' escape. Depp's character lives on a polluted landfill set to be bulldozed, and he highlights the plight of natives in recent American history. He even brings former Native rights campaigner Marlon Brando along for the ride. Apart from a ludicrously trashy love scene and a few too many shots of Depp shirtless and intense, the film was suspenseful and engaging. The Iggy Pop cameo and musical score was of interest, too. A cut above most directorial debuts. Worth a look.

    Brilliant & moving

This film is an excellent directorial debut from JD. Despite the grizzly roots of the story line, do not watch this film expecting a gore fest. If that’s what you’re looking for you will be disappointed.

This is the story of a man who, driven by a life of absolute poverty, heavy drinking & stints in and out of prison, makes the ultimate sacrifice to give his family a chance in life.

It centres mainly on the relationship between Raphael & his family, showing us Raphael’s journey of discovery, the reawakening of his love for his wife & for the first time in his life, becoming the father his children so desperately need.

The Brave is intensely moving, beautifully filmed & a credit to Johnny Depp.

    Cool ending!

Johnny Depp wrote, starred and directed in this often moving, sombre story of a native American family struggling to survive. Depp plays Raphael, an out of work father of two, who is desperate to go straight and not end up in prison again. He hears about a snuff movie being made and decides to go for an audition...

A great directorial debut, that show Depp having thoughful and poignant view behind the camera as well as in front. The end scene strikes the audience like a blunt object - harrowing and succinct and leaves you sober and somewhat older, but in a good way.

    Top performance, top film

This was a very moving film and really well directed by Johnny D. He is so beautiful to watch. It gave a real insight to living in poverty and what ends a person will go to for their family.
