One of the high-water marks of the 1980s teenpic, this Saturday detention drama from director John Hughes has lost some of its freshness in the face of time and endless inferior imitations. Yet this chat-fest still rings true often enough to be relevant to both overgrown teenagers and the disgruntled kids of today. Brat Packers Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy are joined by teen favourite of the time, Molly Ringwald, and the underestimated Anthony Michael Hall for a mix of justified grievances, self-pitying whinges and hard-hitting home truths. The girls easily outshine the boys, but everyone manages to breathe a little life into their essentially clichéd characters.

Abysmal apologia for loutish teenage behaviour.
I watched this years ago when I was younger and fell in love with it.
It is a brillant teen film that we can all relate to in some sort of way.
Judd Nelson is really sexy in this.
Is funny places and thoughtful in other parts.
Eighties film all the way...
Didn't you just wish you went to a High School that was this cool? I know I did. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen this movie, but let's just say I know every character's line in the film.
I first saw this film when I was 13 and the next day at school I raved to all my friends about it. Three years later in 6th Form those same friends were raving about it when it was shown on BBC2. I used to actually skip boring classes and go home and watch this.
This film I totally identified with as a teen, especially the character of Allison played brilliantly by Ally Sheedy. Why? Ask me another but at 13 she was the girl I identitfied with.
This is John Hughes at his best years before he sold out to make the Home Alone movies!
I urge you all to watch this film because it's brilliant.
I didnt find this particularly exciting, rented as it had been recommended, and some of the reviews look promising. However yes i am 18 so wasnt around for this film in the 80s which might explain why it didnt appeal to me at all, didnt see what all the fuss was about. Hope that helps.
A good film - that just overstays it's welcome...and the final scenes are a bit trite. But in general a well acted and well produced film and worth a look.
A cinematic achievement.
A remarkable and stunning screenplay, that works on many emotional levels, and will leave you reeling for life thereafter.
Outstanding performance from all actors, 1st class cinematography, and direction.
A screenplay out of this world.
It doesnt get any better than this.
I loved every second of it.
A film that will never ever leave you.

This has to be one of the most boring pointless films i have ever seen! I can see how in the olden days people might have liked it but these days there are MUCH better films. Literally nothing happens in the film and i had to force my eyes to stay open to watch it only to be left completely dissapointed at the end. If you're waiting for it to get better....it doesn't!!!
I adored this film when I was a kid. Probably becasue I could relate to it at the time. However, on watching it again, 10 years on, it's boring and I had to turn it off half-way through I was that bored!
If it wasn't for 'Stand By Me' then this would be the best film of the Eighties.
Exquisite performances from the beautiful young* cast, superb soundtrack, witty, smart and snappy script and it has a real heart.
However the bit which always makes me laugh out loud (even on my 25th viewing of this movie) is the moment when Emilio Estevez shatters the glass when after his stoned gymnastic display. True 80's John Hughes randomness.
It really has got better and better with age and repeated viewings.
An undeniable classic must-see movie.
* Judd Nelson was 26 when he made this movie!
Seriously what is all the fuss about this film?!?! I found this to be absolute trash- frankly I was so bored I was tempted to turn it off half way through. Predicatable tripe basically. Don't waste a rental getting this one!

I'm now 30 and still love this film, it is one of my all time favourites. This is the film that got me interested in films. I watched it when I was just 13 and it left such an impact. I wanted to be Ally Sheedy!!
All I can say is rent this film, I don't think it has dated apart from the fashion maybe.
