A great performance by George Segal, as a die-hard platoon leader, lifts this war is hell saga out of the ordinary. Filming in Czechoslovakia and interrupted by the actual Russian invasion, big-budget director John Guillermin was clearly trying something different here by adding sober measures of cynical disenchantment to the conventional Second World War melodramatic mix. Epic explosions and razzle-dazzle camerawork ultimately win out over such grandiose thinking action man ideas, however. An A for effort, though.
Cliché runs riot in this WWII yarn, where much ado about a bridge that nobody wants spells that old war-is-madness... read more on Time Out
A weary group of American soldiers are being pushed by thier ambitious officer to sieze the last bridge over the Rhine. Good acting by all the lead actors and a plot that works well.
A good dramatic yarn about an historical event of World war II. Well portrade with plenty of character interaction and sub plots between the people involved. Robert Vaughn played his role as the Wermacht officer charged with destroying the Remagen bridge over the Rhine, to prevent the allied crossing into Germany at the closing stages of the war, with consumate skill. There are clear parallels to issues such as the 'futility of war' and 'needless sacrifice', that give the film a depth of emotional quality frequently missing from such war sagas. None the less, this is a movie with all the 'shoot em up' drama, required by war film enthusiasts, but with the added colour of quality scripting, good acting and historical purity. The end is poignant, yet rewarding in its simplicity. A good film and a must for war drama buffs.
