    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is a very poignant and thought-provoking documentary about the world's number one suicide spot, the golden gate bridge in san francisco.

the crew filmed the bridge over the space of a year and as a result, you see many of the 24 people who committed suicide by jumping off the bridge in the footage. Spliced together with interviews with the close family and friends of a few of the many victims, you get a real insight on the impact that a suicide has on so many people.

it is immensely strange to view the last seconds of so many people's lives, but it is not sensationalised, and you also see some rescues and interventions, plus an interview with a survivor of a suicide leap with some very frank reflection.

For me, the most disturbing aspect of the documentary is not seeing people plunge to their death, but the fact that so many people pass by those who are climbing over the rail to take their own life, without even raising an eyebrow or trying to help.

A very good documentary on a very widespread theme, that doesn't look to provide the answer 'why' for a change.

  • A look into the abyss of the suicidal mind

This documentary looks at those who committed suicide by jumping off the golden gate bridge in San Francisco. It is very strange to go within a few minutes of pressing play, from seeing perfectly ordinary looking people on the bridge clamber over the rails and then, after a moment, end their lives. There's no Hollywood dramatisation or tension leading up to each person's moment; it's all so matter of fact and quick, one minute they're there standing on the edge and then the next they're just falling to their deaths. The frank nature of it was disturbingly reminiscent of the clips from you've been framed, except that instead of someone falling over and getting some money for the recording and it being funny, you know you just saw an actual human being die. Interviews with the friends and families of the jumpers provides insight into their lives, and the sadness each of these unfortunate people were enduring. Responses from loved ones vary, from sadness, to anger and sympathy; even relief for some, that the person may finally be released from their misery. There are also some amazing stories, one young man who decided to jump changed his mind as he fell, and survived and others were spotted and pulled back or convinced to move back from the edge. But the whole thing is underscored throughout by a line of tragedy - the last one in particular of a jobless, loveless man who had long despaired of his life ever getting better and jumped turned out to have received a management job offer on the very same day. Despite all this, the documentary never gets preachy and doesn't try to force any answer on you - instead it gives you space to make up your own mind. As one of the interviewees said: 'I don't have any answers - just a bunch of observations... I don't know why people kill themselves'.

Thought-provoking and moving. Covers a range of topics, with very in-depth interviews. It's hard not to empathise with those effected by the choices that their loved ones made.

  • The Romantic Leap

Emblazoned across postcards, converted into handheld knick knacks for the tourist trade to give to loved ones on there return from San Francisco the worlds most famous bridge. This documentary portrays the dark despairing world that entraps those who decide to make the golden gate bridge there final destination.

Engolfed often in fog the bridge appears to have an heir of mystery surrounding it as people struggling to deal with deep rooted mental illnesses prepare to make the fatal leap.

But what really provides a more shocking insight is the utter ignorance of the endless hoardes of tourists snapping pictures while these clearly desperate people clamber the railings in front of them as they leap to a cold watery grave.

But for me what i found most chilling were the interviews with the departeds relatives/loved ones who in some cases accepted that suicide was on the cards and did little to nothing to prevent it for fear of intrusion on there personal business or the fact there loved ones mental health issues had indeed become too much of a burden in there own lives.

I have visited San Francisco a few times and have walked the bridge while snapping my own pictures of the view to Alcatraz i observed the distance of the bridge to the sea and in my mind there is no answer in this documentary or anywhere else as to what compels a person to end there life in such a dramatic way but i certainly did feel an odd sense of romanticism while standing there and just for a moment the world stood still.
