Most helpful review
Excellent
By a customer from Dundee, Scotland , 25 Nov 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I highly recommend anyone to watch this. It is a very important historical documentary which explores the British Empire in a very rounded and open way, not shying away from exposing the injustice and exploitation. I would also recommend watching the special features section on the making of the production before watching the actual documentary as it will really make you appreciate the hard work put in and the quality of the finished product. In particular I would praise the sound matching as the original visuals were silent but the work they have done on this is outstanding.- Was this review helpful to you?

Stunning film
By empoweredgareth (20 reviews) from Keighley , 25 Jan 2005I was a revelation to see so much good quality pre-war colour film. Because many of the films were drawn from private home movie archives, they tended to highlight the privileged life style of the colonial masters and their patronising attitude to servants and "natives". This plays into the hands of the producers and supports the anti-empire narrative which highlights the negative aspects of British rule.
Nevertheless, the films are an important documentary and should be on every school syllabus, so children can put the current racial debate into some sort of context.- Was this review helpful to you?
