LOVEFiLM Review The Brothers Bloom

  • 2 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

This comedy caper packs star quality with Rachel Weisz and Adrien Brody, but still falls flat...

......starts off as a weird cheesy what century is it supposed to be set in film trip. I think it's supposed to be a romantic comedy? The moral of the story appears to be the classic 'don't play a player'. Reminds me of 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrals' only with a much bigger budget and worse acting. I don't feel that watching this film was a complete waste of my time but there were parts that were really terrible (the Robbie Coltraine part for one). Hope you enjoy it. Rob

  • Watchable OK average film

About two brothers who plan and execute their last big con but one of the bothers falls in love with the mark-Rachel Weisz. It’s watchable and good in parts but lacks credibility and is repetitious and laboured. A good cast with some fine acting but overall let down by the plot and storyline. Rachel Weisz is superb is ever. The films just seems to lack that certain something. It’s just average and is not particularly scary or funny.

Although this film was a bit slow at the start, I am so glad I carried on watching - I really enjoyed it and trying to guess what was real and what was one of their scams! It was quirky, moving and fairly weird, but entertaining.

A quirky romantic road-trip con movie. Rian Johnson may only have made three feature films (as of 2012) but they are all fascinating and interesting. Highly recommended.

  • A missed opportunity

What starts off as a very handsome and quirky comedy about two conmen brothers eventually becomes something pointless and willfully eccentric. At the very least it affords its attractive cast the opportunity to cavort around some fetching Eastern European locations but after a while it all starts to become increasingly self-indulgent in a wannabe Wes Anderson way. Brody and Ruffalo make a good team as the cons homing in on millionairess recluse Weisz who’s totally up for being grifted. But it’s Kikuchi who makes the best impression as their pyrotechnic partner without speaking a word.
