Frightfully stodgy account of the Terence Rattigan play, that comes across as a much darker and broodier version of 'Goodbye Mr Chips' with Redgrave as the stuffy classics teacher at a boys' boarding school who comes to the sobering realisation that he is despised by his colleagues, pupils and wife equally. Until a random act of kindness shakes him to the core. While most of the other characters are merely cyphers, its few moments of life come courtesy of Redgrave's meticulously detailed and affecting performance, though his final flourish at the climax is suspiciously out of character.
