There is no doubt where the fun lies in this merely adequate comedy, and that is in the brief sight of hopefuls Michael Caine and Oliver Reed playing second fiddle to Norman Wisdom. Coming towards the end of his purple patch, Wisdom is not at his best as the fumbling shop assistant whose career in the navy culminates in an ill-fated moonshot. The script does him few favours, however, restricting the opportunities for sentimental slapstick in order to accommodate the surplus plot. Dependable stooges do all that is expected, with Edward Chapman at his bullying best as Wisdom's grocer boss.
Elementary raw recruit comedy with many familiar ruses.
You either love him or loath him but I happen to love him. I met him once and he is a lovely person off stage. This is one of his better films and a classic of its day. Some think his films are dated but just sit back and be entertained rather than having to think about the meaning of a film.
Not the greatest of films, but it was good entertainment. It was good to see so many familiar faces. Worth watching.
