A haunting classic!
By thatgicamoment from London , 24 Oct 2003[Highly rated reviewer]
A good story with a great twist at the end, this is a 'must see' for anyone interested in the history of cinema or just interested in seeing unusual and imaginative films. It may be a bit of a culture shock for anyone used to the apparent realism, special effects and fast-paced action of most modern films, but it is worth making the effort - honestly! It is a silent film with a haunting musical score and a mixture of stylised acting and expressionist sets that is at times perhaps a little bit confusing, but ultimately is fascinating and rewarding.
The story is fairly straightforward on the surface -a freakshow, a freak, seemingly motiveless murders, a clean-cut hero investigating, surely the conclusion is obvious, but nothing much in this film is as it seems. Everything gradually gets more complex and intriguing - even the end leaves you guessing. This is a film that you can watch several times and get different things from it each time. Tim Burton and David Lynch have obviously seen this film, so why haven't you? It's only about 72 mins long, so go on, put any misgivings you may have about watching an 80+ year old German silent film aside and give it a try - you will be pleasantly surprised I'm sure!- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic Movie, Appalling DVD
By a customer , 09 May 2012I've seen movies in less-than-stellar quality before, but this one takes the cake. What did they use to transfer this, Super8 and an 80's camcorder? Not only that, but there's a good 20 mins lopped out - it should be about 75 mins.
I missed the one reviewer who pointed this lot out, so now there are two of us.
This is a classic movie, but I'd avoid this copy, as it's absolute pants.- Was this review helpful to you?

to sleep, perchance to dream
By juradino (811 reviews) from London , 26 Jan 2012Silent classic that underwent similar treatment in mid nineties to Metropolis in early eighties, except that instead of rock songs soundtrack it has subtly composed instrumental one evoking time when film was made. Subtitles follow movie sets in their design and linger long enough but are slightly heavy on the eye. I like the new versions in both cases (with Metropolis I prefer it to the restored original but I haven't seen the original of this one). If you like the final twist you might want to see Shutter Island (2010).- Was this review helpful to you?

Maybe I just don't get silent movies...
By a customer from England , 26 Sep 2010The quality is atrocious, the acting is non-existent, the plot is generic (hey the bad guy works in a psychiatric hospital, so I wonder what'll happen to people who stand up to him... just saying), the music is irritatingly repetitive and all in all the thing had me falling asleep.- Was this review helpful to you?

Amazing to look at
By Billy B Badger from Edinburgh , 23 Feb 2010Visually one of the most important films of all time. It's influence is everywhere even today and it should be watched with that in mind. If you are daft enough to watch it and compare its story with films today then you only have yourself to blame if you are disappointed. The looks the thing and if you have any interest in cinema history then you have to have seen this.- Was this review helpful to you?
