A good story with a great twist at the end, this is a 'must see' for anyone interested in the history of cinema or just interested in seeing unusual and imaginative films. It may be a bit of a culture shock for anyone used to the apparent realism, special effects and fast-paced action of most modern films, but it is worth making the effort - honestly! It is a silent film with a haunting musical score and a mixture of stylised acting and expressionist sets that is at times perhaps a little bit confusing, but ultimately is fascinating and rewarding.
The story is fairly straightforward on the surface -a freakshow, a freak, seemingly motiveless murders, a clean-cut hero investigating, surely the conclusion is obvious, but nothing much in this film is as it seems. Everything gradually gets more complex and intriguing - even the end leaves you guessing. This is a film that you can watch several times and get different things from it each time. Tim Burton and David Lynch have obviously seen this film, so why haven't you? It's only about 72 mins long, so go on, put any misgivings you may have about watching an 80+ year old German silent film aside and give it a try - you will be pleasantly surprised I'm sure!
