If you have ever seen any of Matthew Bourne's work on stage or TV then you'll know he is famous for taking a classic ballet or opera, turning it on its head and bringing it bang up to date into something modern exciting and risque.
For example. Swan Lake is a true masterpiece introducing all male swans with a gay watermark. Nutcracker is glittery pantomime on steroids! So onto The Car Man....
A little disappointing, but mainly because I have been spoilt by the others I mentioned. None the less it has all Bourne's excellent hallmarks.
A gritty and sexual modern day version of the Carmen story with excellent choreography and once again more than a little risque.
Very enjoyable and if you like Bourne's work you'll love this too.- Was this review helpful to you?

(4)Brilliant!
By a customer from Chorley , 01 Mar 2008This is a brilliant DVD, a must=see for anyone interested in dance. Matthew Bourne really makes dance accessible to all ~ I went to see The Nutcracker this week, and was amazed at the 'acting', scenery, costumes etc ~ never a dull moment! The Car Man score, i.e. 'Carmen' is so recongnisable to most people, that it makes the dance even more appealing!- Was this review helpful to you?

Great stage show, doesn't quite works as a film...
By a customer from Durham , 05 Jan 2008I watched the DVD after seeing the stage show. As ever with Bourne's work, the show oozed with fever and passion, a roller coaster ride of raw energy, high emotion and utterly captivating drama.
This DVD recording tried too hard to turn theatre into film. Repeated close-ups and over-stylised editing meant that much of the action on stage was lost. If you're not able to see the stage show, definitely give the DVD a go. If you have, the DVD is unlikely to pass muster.- Was this review helpful to you?
