Perhaps slightly lost on today's audience. I first saw it in the 90s when it came out, I was still searching for depiction of queer life whilst in the process of discovering my own identity. At the time there was a renaissance of sorts, of the genre and the western world was about to be bombarded with new images in what would be termed by Time magazine 'The Gay Nineties'.

To watch the film is to look back at cinema and take notice of the changes that have taken place in the last 80 odd years. A better quality of life as a sexual minority in our culture now, is a testament to the real changes in our society which are there depicted. It is a moving cinematic experience, a celebration of the evolution of queer images and portrayals in films and in their audiences. On top of that the narration by Lily Tomlin and interviews with such stars as Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg and Shirley MacLaine and such queer icons as Quentin Crisp, Harvey Fierstein and Susie Bright. It is thought provoking and moving in equal measure. I would recommend it to any age group and would add that it might be very beneficial to any young people who are discovering themselves and feeling the pressures of being different. Definitely worth a watch. Top marks from me.

  • Hollywood, That Great Maker Of Myths !!!

'The Celluloid Closet' is extremely educational, in that it shows just how much influence Hollywood has on everyone’s thoughts. As Lily Tomlin narrates: 'Hollywood, that great maker of myths, taught straight people what to think about gays and gay people what to think about themselves'.

Really good! I just don't understand why this is on the adult section! Gay material is still a strange thing for the 'general public'

    A must see!

This looked a bit boring, but I really liked it. It was interesting looking how LGBT people have been portrayed in the media over the last 80yrs. Its an interesting documentary.

  • Interesting and Informative

I did see this film when it was released in the 90s but still enjoyed it today as there are so many reminders of old movies, some great others not so great. Despite what a few other reviewers have said about it being dated, the facts about the attitudes of those times haven't changed and are still as interesting, strange, sad and funny as they always were. Fortunately in the intervening period LGBT portrayal has been much more positive, in the main, which makes it all the more poignant to look back at this excellent history.

  • ADULT CONSENT???

This is a very interesting movie about the history of the LGBT movement and its perception through movies.

But the main problem is that this very educational documentary should be made available to everyone and not confined to the Adult section (requiring a password). This in itself tells a lot about the perception that big companies still have of homosexuality!!
