    [Highly rated reviewer]

'Tillie's Punctured Romance' was really rather academic to watch, the print was grainy, the acting of a burlesque nature, especially by the 47 year old Marie Dressler, and Chaplin yet to become the Tramp character he was to become famous for. It was also directed by Mack Sennett, and therein lies the difference between this film and the later ones, which were directed by Chaplin himself only a few years later. These were much fresher, less hackneyed and a lot funnier, and Charlie was fast becoming the wonderful cheeky chappy we all love. Edna Purviance also made a great difference.

If you love Chaplin - all the little comic touches, the perfect timing, the balletic grace - you'll love this.
