Naughty but nice
By Chris Bishop from Brixton, England , 22 Mar 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
Well, this production would doubtless have Mary Whitehouse spinning in her grave - so it must be doing something right! Although it feels at times like an argument in search of a story ('Does 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' have the power to deprave the reader? Let's see, shall we!'), it's a sensitively written, beautifully performed drama that mirrors (and gently subverts) the book's plot. In the tale of a love affair between two jurors in the obscenity trial surrounding Penguin's publication of the book, it is Louise Delamere who is definitely in charge, taking Rafe Spall's Cockney naif in hand (as it were) and teaching him a thing or two about love-making (and love)... Both actors acquit themselves fantastically, particularly Spall, who gives a brave, touching, nuanced performance.
One of the drama's strengths is that it brilliantly shows how the trial was as much about the prevailing classism and sexism of the early 1960s as the 'obscenity' of the book's language and plot. With copies of the book due to be sold at a price that anyone could afford, prosecuting counsel questions in horror how jurors would feel if their wife or, god forbid, their servants should read it! The trial is thus shown to be a landmark case in the ending of censorship based effectively on class - and an important step towards freedom of speech in general. Informative, entertaining, sexy - this DVD is definitely worth a watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

Without shame
By a customer from London , 11 Sep 2008What an amazing film.
I found the book extremely moving, and this fictional account of how it affected the jurors in the Penguin trial is equally so.
This is a real gem of a film, especially if you're familiar with Lady Chatterley's Lover.
Rent it and shake off some of the dogmas that make modern love so sterile.- Was this review helpful to you?

Sex
By a customer from Bury, England , 16 Dec 2007The story of the trial of the contraversial 'Lady Chatterly's Lover' and whether it should be published doesn't sound like exciting stuff itself, but when two of the members of the Jury decide to start doing what is going on in the book, it is just a film about sex interspersed with snippets of court scenes. Amusing and Rafe is not too bad to look at either.- Was this review helpful to you?
