The Child stars Jeremie Renier as Bruno, a young petty thief who has just fathered a baby with his 18 year-old girlfriend Sonia (Deborah Francois).

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Interesting and realistic story about how a young lad can get himself into ever escalating levels of trouble. Nicely acted and set. Well worth watching as it's very thought provoking. Not the cheeriest of films mind, but then sometimes life isn't all smiles and rainbows.

I am cold. I am hungry. I am alone. Tonight I shall sleep alone. It's raining and cold outside. I warm myself with a Pot Noodle. The sell-by date is September 11.

Bruno is hungry. Bruno is hiding in a freezing river. It's raining. Bruno has sold baby Jimmy in an illegal adoption.

    Jimmy's mother, Sonia, isn't happy.

This film does not have a happy ending.

I would give the Pot Noodle one star.

  • Social Drama - French Style

    Rated - 3.5 stars

The film involves a teenage couple in Paris. She has just given birth to his child, a son called Jimmy. He is irresponsible, out of work and making his living by trading in stolen goods. He shows no interest in the baby at all. But then as a result of a reckless act on his part their lives are dramatically changed forever. The result is a harrowing piece of modern social drama which is totally realistic and quite believably the kind of behaviour which goes on in a Western city today.

Interesting enough with good performances but felt a little old hack. I always expect so much of french films and this one didn't quite measure up. Not awful though!

Interesting look at the outcome of desperation when trying to survive without family support mechanisms. Disappointing wrap on the outcomes or consequences of the decisions he had to make. Tender moments of friendship and care towards the young lad, and unspoken repentance towards the girlfriend. The flow of the story line does become uneasy at times but the overall result is thought provoking, if not retrospectively so. Won't appeal to the action style enthusiasts, but the humanitarians at heart will value this.

Belgian film with French dialogue and English subtitles. Renier plays a selfish petty thief with no scruples. His focus on living off others leads to more and more desperate situations as he loses the one good thing in his life. The character is unlikeable yet you follow him to see what happens next. The film is socially well detailed with excellent supporting cast,.and the photography and direction is well done.
