This second volume is another excellent selection which demonstrates Chabrol's individual style while showing the range of his subjects and moods. The films are mainly from the 'seventies, including a spoofy espionage piece in the fashion of the times, 'The Road to Corinth', with Jean Seberg, and 'The Breach' (originally 'La Rupture',) one of his classics. A real surprise was 'Une Partie de Plaisir', a corrosive piece about the deterioration of a marriage with an ending which was like a blow to the stomach. Because Chabrol does not often show explicit violence, when it does occur, it is doubly effective. 'Cop Au Vin' is a detective story set in a small community, and the latest of the films, 'Flower of Evil, made in 2000, is similarly concerned with crimes and misdeeds in a confined place - this time a family whose mother is running in local elections. If you have seen Chabrol before, you might be surprised at the variety of subject and treatment, but if you haven't, this is as good a place to start as any.- Was this review helpful to you?

This was a brilliant piece of melodrama with real social bite. The buildup of tension was faultlessly precise and the acting was outstanding. Stephane Audran is always a joy to watch both for her beauty and for the absoluteness with which she lives her parts, but the fineness of Chabrol's directorial touch in this film appears in the way he harmonises the notes sounded by her deeply felt and emotional role with satirical, comical, even farcical elements in other parts, so that the viewer's responses are kept unpredictable and alive.- Was this review helpful to you?

Ouch!!
By a customer from Berkhamsted England , 23 Jun 2009This film was released a year after one of my all-time Chabrol favourites - The Champagne Murders - so I was looking forward to a treat. Instead came this awful apology for a pastiche - at least one can only assume it was a pastiche - of a spy movie. In contrast to the wonderful Stephane Audran in the earlier film, Jean Seberg seems to be in totally the wrong film, The plot was a bit like a Thunderbirds adventure - without the same acting quality - though we never got past half way so maybe the ending improved and the mise-en-scène reminds one of nothing so much as Peter Sellers intoning his great Bal-ham gateway to the South parody.

An average Chabrol!
By Cato (705 reviews) from Lydbury North , 01 Jun 2009Not up to his usual standard, this Chabrol lacked the menace of 'Le Boucher' and 'Les Noces Rouges' for example. The plot was also a little obscure, in that one of the victims was glimpsed only slightly at the beginning of the film. Also the detective who solved the case, whilst being suitably maverick, was also somewhat sadistically agressive in his manner of interrrogation. And you think your family has problems
By a customer from Oxford, England , 22 Apr 2009Although this film touches on some very intense themes - murder, incest, rape - it manages to keep a fairly light touch. It even has funny moments and the stellar cast keeps the whole thing believable. Recommended!- Was this review helpful to you?
