A strong adaptation...By JohnnyRoss (373 reviews) from Leeds , 24 Jan 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]This film, based on Alice Walker's award-winning epistolary novel of the same name, is a very strong adaptation of the book. Performances by the entire cast, especially Whoopi Goldberg (her debut screen appearance), is very impressive and worthy of admiration. Music by Quincy Jones is emotive and fitting for the piece. A masterful classic of huge proportions, both emotional and engaging, this film will remain with you for a very long time after watching it.

A powerful classicBy LadyDarbonville (60 reviews) from South West, England , 09 Nov 2008Not your average Steven Spielberg film, this powerful masterpiece captures a horific tale of control displayed in a number of different ways.
This film remains a timeless classic due to the era that it's set in.
This should be on the list of anyone who calls themself a film fanatic.
Worth itBy a customer from Cheltenham , 03 Nov 2008Although it has several flaws, it is a bit too long, has some loose ends, there are some amateur film techniques used (the baby is so fake that it takes great acting to make it work), it still has some spark to it. Loved Oprah Winfrey's character (Miss Sophia), loved the singing, Whoopi Goldberg and some familiar faces in not very familiar settings. It is worth it.
Nice film, sad and worth a watch!By a customer from Royston , 30 Oct 2008Enjoyed this film, was sad in many places but also a nice story.
Would'nt rush out and buy it kind of film but worth a watch when nothing elses is on tv.

The Colour PurpleBy Angiee (100 reviews) from Solihull , 17 Oct 2008This film certainly was not purple or blue. It was fantastic. I have read the book and found that the film portrayed trhe characters and treated the subject very sensitively withhout being overly cinematic. Of course there is directorial interpretation but that didn't detract from Alice Walkers' wonderful story telling.
I loved it and will watch it again. A great resource for those studying the book at A level.
